Anxiety, Stress, and Panic – These concerns make up a large portion of my work, and they are common struggles that people face in the midst of busy lives with pressing demands. I have found success with an approach that incorporates a variety of techniques. I am trained in biofeedback for use with anxiety and panic. This has been a particularly effective tool for addressing the physiological symptoms that arise, particularly when used in conjunction with traditional therapy. When physical symptoms are reduced, it becomes easier to direct attention to the sources of the anxiety, and this is where healing often begins.
Depression – Depression is another area that makes up a large percentage of my work. I have several years of experience working with individuals struggling with depression, and my approach draws heavily on cognitive and behavioral strategies. I have also led interactive workshops and group therapy on this issue.
Grief – Tragic events are likely to occur at some point in our lives. The loss of a loved one, unwanted changes in circumstances, or the end of a valued relationship is nearly inevitable, and the grief that follows events like these can be overwhelming. The storm of emotions and sense of loss can feel heart wrenching and endless, and those feelings often do last for weeks, months, and even years. But therapy can provide support, comfort, and solace for the painful struggle that is often difficult to address with others. I have walked this difficult road with many and, though the pain may linger, peace can be found at the end of the journey.
Trauma and Abuse – Many of us have experienced or will experience one or more traumatic events in our lifetime. Causes of trauma are varied and include natural disasters like a fire or an earthquake, a violent crime, abuse or neglect, or exposure to wartime and combat-related violence. In my experience, healing occurs best in a safe and accepting environment. In that protected space, the expression of emotions, including anger, sadness, fear, guilt, regret and more, is encouraged and coping strategies are explored. The goal is to help the individual rediscover a sense of control and connection that may have been lost in the aftermath of the traumatic event.
LGBT and Gender Identity Issues – I have a strong interest in providing affirming, competent, and respectful therapy for individuals who are dealing with issues unique to the LGBT community. The issues are many—they include coming out to family and friends, dealing with homophobia, transphobia and discrimination, working through religious doubts and injuries, and navigating social biases and aggressions. These things are often difficult, painful, and confusing, and working through them can be lonely. I will bring openness and compassion to the process as I seek to understand your unique experiences from the past and present.
